The History And Future Of The Operatic Canon

Public funding and Impact; when collaborative working isn’t the ‘norm’

Everybody knows that what is often described as ‘classical’ music is old, and getting older.

It’s a problem with serious ramifications for today’s opera industry, with the canon continuing to shrink and commentators regularly predicting its imminent demise.

This workshop will present the collaborative and public-funding elements of an on-going AHRC-funded project on ‘The History And Future Of The Operatic Canon’. It will consider the difficulties of that kind of work in an area, like so many, still largely dominated by lone-wolf scholarship, the potential for symbiosis between grant projects and traditional academic outputs, and (inevitably) the role played by Impact.

Join the discussion. Ideal for academics from any arts or humanities discipline.

Workshop Leader:
Dr Cormac Newark
(Head of Research, Guildhall School of Music & Drama)
