West Side Story is an American musical set in the Upper West Side neighbourhood of New York in the 1950s. The story was inspired by Shakespeare’s play Romeo And Juliet and explores the rivalry between two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. The musical score includes Maria, Somewhere, Tonight and I Feel Pretty.
The 1957 Broadway production, directed and choreographed by Jerome Robbins, was nominated for six Tony awards and a film in 1961, of the same name, won 10 Academy Awards.
For many, the tale of romance, racial prejudice and heart-breaking tragedy holds up as well today as it did almost six decades ago.
