Charlotte Hodes, Professor in Fine Art at London College of Fashion is exhibiting a collection of ceramic vases at the Clara Gallery in Paris. Each with their obvious female connotations serving as a three dimensional canvas onto which images are drawn.
The vase functions as a poetic motif rather than as a sculptural form. The female figure, depicted as a silhouette, is the overriding theme, frequently juxtaposed with alternative historical representations enveloped by pattern, drapery and contemporary motifs associated with the domesticity of female lives. The work seeks to evoke a sensuousness and feeling of celebration whilst simultaneously questioning the position of the female figure as a decorative motif. Hodes’ strongly craft centred, tactile collage making process is clearly evident in the ceramics as well as her intricately cut collages which will also be on show.
