About the speaker
Dr Murat Ergin is associate professor of Sociology at Koç University, Istanbul.

He received his PhD in Sociology from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis in 2005. His research interests revolve broadly around the formation of boundaries and identities, and include research on nationalism, race, and ethnicity; culture and cultural consumption; crime and deviance; technology; and death.

He is the author of Is the Turk a White Man? Race and Modernity in the Making of Turkish Identity(Brill Studies in Critical Social Sciences, 2016).

About the presentation
This presentation brings together three strands from my previous research race in Turkey. First, I will examine the local critiques to the concept of race in my work; then compare critical accounts with forms of everyday racism and the way racism operates in everyday language in overt and covert ways. Finally, I talk about contemporary forms of racialization. An evaluation of these challenging concepts helps us pose several questions about current global academic hierarchies.
