In the UK and internationally, the ‘Chinese student’ figure occupies an important place in the cultural imagination.

Regardless of their diverse origins and cultural backgrounds, they are often seen as a homogeneous group, and in stereotypes such as cash cows, scapegoats and model minority. They also enter into public discussions and policy debates about national economy, international relations and anti-Asian racism. What role do ‘Chinese students’ – here defined broadly and ambiguously based on popular perception – play in contemporary British society? How can schools, universities and the public better engage with them? This event invites guest speakers who are often seen (rightly or wrongly) as, or have worked with, ‘Chinese students’ to share their stories and experiences. This event unravels the stereotypes, opportunities and challenges of being ‘Chinese students’ in contemporary Britain. It also hopes to engage with current debates about cultural identity, racism, transnational mobility, and the neoliberalisation of higher education.

This is a public event open to both university students, staff and the general public. It invites the audience to share their stories and experiences at the online event and through an online sharing forum. You can contribute to the online discussion any time on the Padlet and we will share some of your stories at the event.
