7th February, 2014 / 11.00am - 4.00pm
29th April, 2021
This event is the latest in our Arts and Health Research Forum series and will consider the issue of women walking from historic, social and cultural perspectives.
Dr Kerri Andrews is a Reader in Women’s Literature and Textual Editing at Edge Hill University and her book, ‘Wanderers: A History of Women Walking’, was published in September 2020. Tracing the footsteps of ten women walker-writers from eighteenth-century parson’s daughter Elizabeth Carter – who desired nothing more than to be taken for a vagabond in the wilds of southern England – to modern walker-writers such as Nan Shepherd and Cheryl Strayed, ‘Wanderers’ offers a beguiling, alternative view of the history of walking. Kerri is also one of the leaders of Women In The Hills, an Arts and Humanities Research Council-funded project aimed at exploring the factors enabling and inhibiting women’s access to upland landscapes.
This ‘In Conversation’ event will see Kerri provide an insight into the history of women walking, re-examining assumptions of gender and exercise, before moving to consider contemporary aspects of women walking and walking the pandemic more generally.
This event will be co-chaired by Evelyn Wilson, Co-Director, TCCE and Dr Gemma Outen, Programme Curator, TCCE.
This event is free, however advanced booking is essential. Academics and staff from TCCE member institutions are guaranteed a place (please use your institutional email to book in order to avoid confusion), other places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis so please book promptly to avoid disappointment.
