We think of objects in our environment as being stable – if I see a cup of coffee on the desk in front of me, that object will remain the same object if I blink my eyes, or leave the room.

But how we perceive, conceptualise, and describe things is remarkably malleable. In this workshop, we will unpack some of the ways in which individual perspective and shape what we see, and how taking diversity into account allows for a more explanatory model of perception.

Christina Kim is interested in language processing – a field at the intersection between linguistics and cognitive psychology – particularly how language interpretation is situated in context. She addressed these questions experimentally, using eye-tracking and other behavioural methods from cognitive science. Before joining the English Language and Linguistics department at Kent in 2013, Kim did a joint PhD in Brain and Cognitive Sciences and Linguistics at the University of Rochester, followed by a postdoc at the University of Chicago.

This event is part of Diversity and Disruption: An Intersectional Valentine.

Opening dialogues around the challenges diversity offers to theories and practices in visual and online cultures, our intersectional Valentine combines short interdisciplinary and interactive workshops to provoke questions on the diversity of images, diversity in themes and the making of visual and online cultures. Taking place on the 14th of February, we position Diversity and Disruption as an alternative love event, which additionally considers connectivity, digital intimacy, intersectionality and representation in the post-digital age.
