26th October, 2018
The aim of the Symposium is to bring together practice, theory and research in vocal pedagogy from representatives of the UK training and academic sector in the Northern hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere, along with those in the East, in order to address inclusive pedagogical practices.
It will give particular attention to the Voice Studies training community, as it has developed in relation to the MA/MFA model at Central, and its relationship to emergent spoken voice pedagogy in Chile, Colombia and India.
In addition, it will interrogate ways to open out dialogue and exchange in order to challenge the historical privileging of vocal pedagogic practice from the West/North academies and conservatoires.
It will re-position the academic practitioner conversation in order to include a wider set of training contexts and values drawn from a range of specific cultural contexts. Questions such as whether the acquisition of vocal technique is itself an elitist venture will be amongst those addressed.
