Call for articles for the third issue of the magazine “Gendered Voices”
The Gender and Sexuality Cluster is calling for articles for the third issue of their magazine “Gendered Voices”. The theme for this issue is ‘Milestones’, inspired by the recent centenary of some women gaining the right to vote.
We are particularly looking for submissions from postgraduates and early career researchers across all academic disciplines. We are interested in submissions that address how your gender or sexual identity has affected your experience of research and academia, or how your gender or sexual identity has influenced the topics you chose to research. We are also interested in submissions about research that deals with, or challenges, the idea of Milestones. Some suggestions for inspiration:
– Anniversaries and centenaries
– Cultural changes
– Turning points
– Life milestones, like puberty, pregnancy, or the menopause
– Breaking boundaries/new ground in both research and topics
– The legacy of milestones – good and bad
– Narrative of milestones – how we talk about and communicate a milestone after the fact
– The establishment of milestones – is it an arbitrary identification?
– Challenging established milestones, blurring the lines, and thinking of narratives of transition rather than a single moment
– Personal milestones – like the creation or completion of a PhD
We also welcome creative pieces that are inspired by the theme of Milestones. The theme is completely open to interpretation, and we welcome any queries and question if you are unsure if your research fits with the theme.
Gendered Voices is an interdisciplinary and cross cultural publication run by doctoral students which features articles written by PhD students, early career researchers and invited guest writers outside academia. It is a public engagement project that aims to engage non-academic audiences in academic research. Our readers also include academics from a variety of disciplines and career stages.
February 2017 saw the publication of the very first issue of Gendered Voices which
you can find here. We published our second issue in November, with the theme ‘Beyond the Binary’ – you
can find the magazine here. The two magazines have been read 2755 times.
Submissions should be between 1000 and 1300 words. We ask you to write in a language that is accessible for individuals both outside their subject specific discipline and outside academia. Please send us a bio of no more than 50 words including your university affiliation and area of study. Any references should be included as endnotes, and in the Harvard style, although references are not required. If you have any images you wish to be included with your article please send a high-resolution version with your submission, and please make sure that you have permission to publish the image.
The deadline for submissions is 11 th March, and submissions should be emailed in a word document to genderandsexualitycluster@gmail.com.
