Ravensbourne announced the launch of the first course to be validated under its own processes since receiving Taught Degree Awarding Powers (TDAP), a two year Masters of Architecture course.
Ravensbourne is now recognised as an institution that can award its own degrees and this two year course is a prestigious start.
The course defines itself as experimental, while being profession-oriented. It is designed for students who want to qualify and practice as architects designing buildings in relation to their physical, cultural and social settings. It places its students’ individual interests and aspirations at the centre of the curriculum and encourages the development of their own creative directions.
In November, students will have the opportunity to take part in the Tetuán Madrid development plan, Europe’s largest urban development site and in December they will be working with the City of Florence to reconsider the development of one of the most historic cities in Europe.
Structured to recognise the preferred learning patterns of postgraduate architecture students, the course affords time for both independent study and industry engagement.
Commenting, Layton Reid, Associate Dean of the Department of Architecture said: “This new course comes at an exciting time in architecture. Opportunities exist for a new and vital voice in the pursuit of radical designs grounded in the skills and techniques required to produce real architectural outputs; buildings which are dynamic, experimental and tangible.
“The department has earned a reputation for equipping our students with the skills and intellect to drive the future. Our courses have an entrepreneurial attitude to introducing new opportunities and this is key to our commitment to staying ahead of the curve. Across the course students will have the opportunity to gain practical experience in the field, working with globally recognised brands like Alexander McQueen, Smarter Cities Now and Nordic Tech.”
Tom Fitzsimmons, Course Coordinator for MArch added: “It is a real privilege to partake in the development of this programme, which is the eighth Masters of Architecture degree in London. In this context we have been working hard to design a unique course that uses knowledge of new technologies and contemporary architectural thinking by leading practitioners as creative tools towards the making of the future environment.”
