The seminar will present findings from an NIHR School for Social Care Research scoping study entitled E-inclusion and access to the ICT sector of older people in England.

The project adopted a mixed method approach including a literature review, a focus group and individual interviews with older people, as well as interviews with a range of experts from academia, third sector organisations, and local and national governments.

Overall, the results show that many older people report some benefits of using of ICT for certain aspects of their daily life. However, the effects of digital engagement on older people’s quality of life are not universally positive. Furthermore, research methods to measure the social impact of technology use need further development in order to sufficiently capture older people’s experiences in today’s digital age.

Speaker

Dr Jacqueline Damant has worked since 2006 at LSE on a range of projects around the digital inclusion of older people, dementia care and personalisation in residential care. She previously worked as a nurse on acute psychiatric and neonatal intensive care units in Montreal, Canada as well as on a geriatric unit in Tuebingen, Germany.
