Lyrical and fidgeting, Federico Garcia Lorca’s intoxicating Poet in New York inhaled the sights and smells of a city in flux. In collaboration with the Guildhall School and supported by Instituto Cervantes, Poet in the City transforms Milton Court into the whir of 1920s New York to combine live jazz music and performances from the text by celebrated actor, Paapa Essiedu, to reimagine the world of Lorca’s ‘sleepless city’.

Xon de Ros is Lecturer of modern Spanish literature at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford. She has written in both Spanish and English, and in particular, his relationship with cinema.

Paapa Essiedu is a British actor known for his work in theatre, film and television. A graduate of the Guildhall, he played Hamlet at the RSC earlier this year, and also starred in Sam Mendes’ King Lear at the National Theatre.

Jorge de Juan is an actor and director of the Spanish Theatre Company in London. This autumn sees him launch Cervantes Theatre in Southwark and he has performed Lorca at Sadler’s Wells Theatre.

Led by critically acclaimed jazz pianist and Guildhall’s Jazz Director Head of Jazz Malcolm Edmonstone with musicians from across the department, the Paradise Standards bring together the jazz standards of the 1920’s, capturing the moment when musicians emerge from mass migration, and move up the Mississppi delta from New Orleans to Chicago, before being lured to New York as the music finds its enduring home.
