LCM Expo showcases technology and student talent

The first London College of Music Expo took place recently, and in a new step for the College it was live streamed to an additional online audience.

The LCM Expo demonstrated the College’s cutting-edge technology as well as the variety of talent from the College. Over 140 audience members in Weston Hall had an unconventional experience, as some performances were streamed live from LCM facilities across the Ealing campus. At times, the performers themselves were playing from different locations, whilst the audience experienced this as a single performance. This was possible due to LCM’s state-of-the-art Dante audio network and the world’s largest Focusrite RedNet installation.

A host of talent from across the College was showcased on the night, and students from all courses and musical genres featured in the evening’s programme. The Expo was organised and managed by students from Music Technology and Music Management courses, with a crew of over 40 working behind-the-scenes in addition to the performers.

Xenos Barrett, LCM student and Expo Network and Technical Manager, said, ‘An event of this scale and complexity hadn’t been done before by LCM so we thought ‘Let’s break it in, let’s get the ball rolling, let’s have a go’. I was most excited about using all the new equipment as part of the university’s wider investment, especially the systems ‘behind the scenes’ like our Audio over IP network and wireless comms.

‘We wanted to create a solid and consistent product with features like projection-mapped signage in the foyer and the Live YouTube broadcast, which was a huge success, making it a truly live LCM live event. We hope it will become what people expect from LCM and I look forward to being part of the team in future events to perfect what we’ve started.’

Sara Raybould, Director of the London College of Music said, ‘This is a true demonstration of what the London College of Music is and I am incredibly proud.’

You can catch up on YouTube with the live stream from the evening which reached a global audience.
