Plenary lecture in Translation with Dr Daniel Linder, University of Salamanca
Translation of slang in (detective) fiction tends to involve some loss, yet readers generally enjoy a similar experience of the author’s realistic portrayal of the (under)world. How is it possible for there to be less slang yet enough for readers to sense it and enjoy it? Prof. Daniel Linder shows source-text and target-text passages from American and Iberian novelists and uses reader reception questionnaires to demonstrate how less slang in translated texts does not necessarily lessen the reading experience.
