According to Vladimir Putin, ‘love for the motherland’ binds Russians to one another and to the state as a people. But do ordinary Russians share his opinion? What does it mean to ‘love the motherland,’ and does everyday patriotism really translate into loyalty to the state? Drawing on interview and content data, this paper examines the ways that patriotism is realized in terms of daily practices in Russia. The paper’s findings challenge the Kremlin’s vision of a politically engaged Russian public that supports centralized rule, but they also reveal significant social barriers to collective action.
