Written by the radical egalitarian Sylvain Maréchal, this play (first performed in 1793 or Year II) is the first example of participatory theatre in a revolutionary context and a precursor of the avant-garde theatre of Jarry and Mayakovsky.

The aim of the production is not to stage a historical curiosity or heritage project but to reactivate elements of utopian thought germane to a contemporary situation. To this end, we intend to incorporate student discussion and translation decisions into the scenario itself. The play will conclude with a discussion involving representatives from contemporary egalitarian movements, including Syriza.

Performed by final year students of the French Department under the direction of Simon Hatab. In French and English with subtitles.
