The Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) in collaboration with The Culture Capital Exchange hosted a roundtable with academics and representatives from music sector about the role which Arts and Humanities research can play in the present-day music industry.

The discussion investigated the digital revolution and how it has affected business models for distributors, recording companies and artists, as well as presented new challenges in the legal framework for copyright and IP protection.

The roundtable determined that while there is a great deal of data around music, there is no central database, and that research needs to be relevant to the business currently, not retrospectively. There was a call for more research to be undertaken around the continuing impact of the internet on music, multi-disciplinary approaches to music, cross industry knowledge, and diversity gaps. The discourse concluded that to view the music industry as homogenous is problematic as music development, production and dissemination often has no relation to the ‘music industry’, and there is a need to produce arguments which have ‘public value’ in order to achieve Government response.
