In a Millennium poll, Sebastian Faulks’s Birdsong was voted one of the top 50 novels of the 20th century. To mark the passing of a century since the outbreak of the Great War, Dr Anne Rowe will explain the ways in which this moving and often shocking novel not only attempts to tell the truth of the human devastation of War but also to express the inexpressible – so that ‘we shall remember them’.
Anne Rowe is Associate Professor in English Literature and Director of the Iris Murdoch Archive Project at Kingston University.
