Drawing on Tolkien’s three major works – The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and The Silmarillion, we will explore how Tolkien’s traumatic experiences as a soldier during the First World War profoundly shaped his novels, creating new worlds that provided relief from the horrors of the 20th century. We will consider how Tolkien asks us to think about our responsibilities to each other, and how the work might offer a manifesto against violence and tyranny.

Sara Upstone is Associate Professor in English Literature at Kingston University.
