Future Play: Music Systems in the 21st Century
13 – 15 March 2013

The Barbican and the Los Angeles Philharmonic present an international symposium, which will take place during the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s first Barbican international associate residency. Bringing together some of the world’s top music institutions, field experts, leading artists and educationalists, this symposium will explore the impact and need for ensembles, venues and conservatoires in today’s society and the crucial role they could play in our future cultural landscape.

Highlights include

• An introductory talk from John Adams
• Keynote from Peter Sellars and panel discussion chaired by Charlotte Higgins (Chief Arts Writer, The Guardian) with Gillian Moore (Head of Classical Music, Southbank Centre), and John Holden (Associate at DEMOS)
• Panel discussions chaired by Sir Nicholas Kenyon (Managing Director, Barbican) with Deborah Borda (President and CEO, Los Angeles Philharmonic Association), Kathryn McDowell (Managing Director, London Symphony Orchestra), and Simon Reinink (General Director, Concertgebouw Amsterdam)
• Workshops and breakout sessions, including an introductory talk from social reformer Richard Holloway and an afternoon hosted by Darren Henley
• A focus on three music programmes with international relevance and a panel discussion chaired by Sean Gregory (Director of Creative Learning, Barbican) with young musicians and Dick Hallam, In Harmony Ltd
• An open rehearsal with young musicians from East London and Los Angeles led by Gustavo Dudamel

Please note that this symposium is open to music education industry professionals, who if booking for Friday 15 March will receive a ticket to the Discover Dudamel event as part of their symposium ticket and do not need to book for that event separately.
