Turner Prize nominated artist filmmaker Luke Fowler will be at hmvcurzon Wimbledon for a special screening of ‘Pilgrimage From Scattered Points’ (2006), about the avant-garde English composer Cornelius Cardew (1936-1981) and The Scratch Orchestra (1968-73). Luke Fowler will be present after the film for a post screening discussion.

Formed in 1968, The Scratch Orchestra promised a fluid community where students, office workers, amateur musicians and some professional composers could gather together for performance, music making and edification. After two years this musical and social experiment became rigorously self-critical, with debates about the function of their art and whom it served, triggering a split in the Orchestra into two opposing camps. “Pilgrimage from Scattered Points” looks at the internal contradictions and struggles within the Orchestra with first person interviews, recent and archive footage and predominantly unreleased music.

Screening alongside Luke Fowler’s work will be recent student films from CCW Graduate School selected from an open submissions competition.
