A little group of penitents have escaped from Dante’s Purgatorio and landed in the 21st century where sin has had a disorienting overhaul.
It’s bewildering. Human failure has a whole new vocabulary. Instead of sinfulness people have issues and therapy, pathologies and 12 step programmes. Judgemental is a term of insult here and moral relativism rules.
Some things just don’t change, despite the passing of time, and not everything is new for the returnees. Conscience still stabs them, and falling in love feels as confusing and divine a comedy as ever…
