Lion Television and The Culture Capital Exchange had an open call-out to academia for ideas to be developed into engaging, informative and original factual television programmes.  The call was open to all academics working within member organisations of The Culture Capital Exchange, across all disciplines and subject areas. Through the open call, TCCE identified ideas which had the potential for widespread appeal on mainstream terrestrial UK television, as well as the potential to work internationally. They collected proposals which demonstrated depth and insight into modern and relevant subjects. There was a four phase selection process which accumulated to a pitching event in February 2012, where shortlisted applicants were invited to pitch their worked-up proposal to a panel of producers.  Lion Television took the strongest shortlisted proposals forward to discussion with a range of commissioners, and the proposals with the strongest interest from commissioners were taken into development by Lion Television.
