This year is the fourth annual law conference at Middlesex University. This conference aims to bring together scholars from law, criminology, sociology and other disciplines to explore racial/religious motivated actions and conduct which are prohibited by law. This includes discrimination and unequal treatment as well as speech inciting to racial/religious hatred and violence and crimes motivated by this.

The conference will have a socio-legal focus and brings together expertise within in human rights and equality, hate speech and hate crimes and will be of interest to academics and postgraduate students in criminology and legal and social studies as well as to other people with a interest in the current debates in this area.

The first part of the conference will focus on the clash between freedom of religious manifestation with other fundamental rights, like the right to equality and freedom from discrimination. In the second part, the focus shifts to specific restrictions of freedom of religious expression, such as hate speech and hate crime.
