BA Acting at Drama Centre London presents ‘Spring Awakening’
Written by Frank Wedekind, in a version by Edward Bond.
Directed by Aoife Smyth
Spring Awakening explores the conflict between an oppressive bourgeois state and the natural sexual desires of its adolescents in an unnamed 19th Century provincial German town. With the help of Edward Bond’s poetic and ironic translation, Wedekind’s play is an extraordinary vital and contemporary exploration of the curiosity and fascination teenagers have with sex, death and the very purpose of living.
Completed in 1891, Spring Awakening was so controversial that it would have to wait fifteen years for its first censored performance by Max Reinhart in 1906.
