A mix of fresh new sounds from City’s legendary Sound Studios: experimental electronica, sonic art, field recordings, audio-visual work and music for the dancefloor, created in the last year by City students.
The Sound Studios at City, University of London were established by Simon Emmerson (now Professor of Music, Technology and Innovation at De Montfort University) at the foundation of City’s Department of Music in 1975. Since then, the Studios have played a major role in the development of electronic and electroacoustic music, producing generations of leading composers and researchers in these fields.
In 1990 Peter Gabriel formally opened the newly constructed studios in the College Building, and in 2007 the studios were refurbished once again to their current high specification.
The Studios have also hosted a number of eminent visiting professors including (among others) Iannis Xenakis, Jonty Harrison, R. Murray Schafer and Karlheinz Stockhausen.
City’s BSc, BMus, MA Music, PhD students and staff continue to make an impact at national and international levels, as composers, sound designers, sound artists, software developers, and in research and teaching posts at academic institutions around the world.
