References to the ‘Global South’ have made it to the centre of debates about world affairs.
From climate change activism to multilateral negotiations, it has become a staple terminology in media, politics and academic research. This talk approaches the ‘Global South’ as a meta category: a tool that maps global space by classifying a wide range of social phenomena.
Following a review of definitions and diverging understandings, we will explore why an explicit and differentiated approach to meta categories is a crucial component of knowledge production. In preparation for this talk, participants are invited to read through the 2021 Third World Quarterly Special Issue “The ‘Global South’ in the study of world politics“.
