This contemporary translation/adaptation of Gorky’s shocking and radical play, first directed by Stanislavsky for the Moscow Art Theatre in 1902, has been devised collaboratively by the actors and creative team as a response to the play in the context of our own troubled times.
In its depiction of a group of people whose lives have hit rock bottom, the play remains revolutionary both in terms of its highly politicised social realism and in its uncompromisingly cynical view of human nature.
The translation of the text was developed by the actors collaboratively with Directors Ben Naylor and Natasha Fedorova and Dramaturg Yuval Brigg.
The production features performance of The Point by Kae Tempest, by permission of Lewinsohn Literary.
This production contains scenes of mental illness, suicide, homelessness and substance abuse; and physical, sexual and domestic violence.
Adapted by The Company from The Lower Depths by Maxim Gorky (1902)
Performed by MA Acting – Classical
The filmed version of this production is available to view on Vimeo all day everyday until April 6th.
