A ‘PhD centered’ event aiming to create a space for us to share experiences/resources around feminist methods & methodologies.

Gender and sexuality have been popular topics in the field of social science and humanities looking back to a history of more than 50 years of scholarship.

Reflecting on the critical intervention of researchers and feminist activists,  this event brings together five City, University of London PhD students across from the fields of sociology, media and cultural studies, and international politics to discuss how feminist methodologies inform their approaches and fieldwork.

Fostering a platform for debate and exchange of ideas, “Feminist research approaches: methods in practice” invites students and scholars to discuss the challenges of researching gender and sexuality in the 21st century.

Following the introduction of the research dissertation projects in the first hour, there will be time for a 15 minute Q&A / discussion session. Each presenter will also share one of their favourite texts for feminist methods, and encourage participants to bring their own to the session.

Chair: Xintong Jia
Speakers:

  • Timo Koch: ‘Other worlds – researching Christian conservativism from a feminist standpoint’
  • Hannah Curran-Troop: ‘The knotty process of representation and critique in feminist digital ethnography’
  • Xintong Jia: ‘A reflective account of conducting feminist qualitative fieldwork abroad during the global pandemic’
  • Clare Bowen and Penny Nakou: ‘Reflections around the use of focus groups, the perspective of an insider’
