Speaker: Biranda Ford (with doctoral students)
Attention has been drawn in recent years to cultural difference in the conservatoire, particularly to how students from non-European backgrounds are viewed when they perform classical music. Though calls have been made for diversity to be embraced in music performance, how this is actually played out in conservatoire practices, such as assessment, expectations around interpretation and programming is less documented.
This presentation will start with an exposition of Biranda Ford’s research into the arguments for moving away from a reliance on received traditions and will then open up to a panel discussion from doctoral students about how epistemological diversity can be instantiated and embedded in conservatoire practices.
