Speaker: Dr Jo Gibson
There is growing discussion of inequalities in socially engaged art, for example, inequalities in pay and labour conditions and violent practices. Jo suggests inequalities in socially engaged co-creative processes are enmeshed in discourse surrounding the artistry of leader/facilitators, and deficit model practices. She draws on her community music Practice as Research PhD, to zoom in on the fine details of her co-creative practice with groups. Jo will use this, alongside cultural democracy and critical theory, to suggest that active attention to inequality in the music-making context, and the community musician’s responsibility to care for and support participant contribution, is needed.
