New pilot music project launched to support mother-baby bonding at University College Hospital

GuildhallSchool Red
Music has been shown to decrease anxiety for both mothers and babies and is a powerful and universal tool for connection.

This new project, taking place on the antenatal and postnatal wards on the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Wing of University College Hospital, aims to support positive and healthy birthing journeys, especially at a time when Covid-19 is presenting additional stresses and challenges for new mothers.

Project leader and School alumna Rhia Parker had already gained experience of creating and performing music in healthcare settings through her award-winning project Music, Memory & Me, which was delivered on the elderly care wards at University College Hospital and the Royal Free Hospital.

The recorded selection of lullabies and folk songs from around the world aims to create a space for quiet relaxation and breathing, and each of the pieces is linked to a colour and some short descriptions to help guide mothers into engaging with the music in a particular way. The recordings are accessed via a QR code displayed on the ward and Rhia and the team have worked closely with the ward matron to develop a feedback survey for patients and staff.
