LSBU partners with Southwark Business Awards for second year running

London South Bank University

LSBU is partnering with Southwark Business Awards (SBA) for the second year running, to deliver these popular awards which recognise the successes and achievements of the borough’s 18,000 local businesses.

Now in their third year overall, Southwark Business Excellence Awards have been declared open for entries following a launch event at the Sea Containers building in Central London.

The launch was attended by 200 guests who heard inspiring presentations from sponsors and organisers, including Councillor Stephanie Cryan, Southwark Council’s Cabinet Member for Jobs, Business and Innovation; Les Johnson, Chairman of Southwark’s Chamber of Commerce; Rt Hon Sir Simon Hughes, Chancellor of LSBU and Alison May, LSBU’s Apprenticeships Manager.

Alison May, said:

“At LSBU we are passionate and enthusiastic in our support for local businesses. There is no other university in London which can better support the growth of small business through European funded projects. We currently run five business support programmes worth over £9million, that have attracted over seven-hundred SMEs and we want to assist many more in future.

“LSBU is also committed to supporting enterprise. The University is home to 72 small businesses, start-ups and entrepreneurs with a total annual turnover of £317million and our Clarence Centre for Enterprise has been ranked 15th in the world among university business incubators.”

We’re also supporting the awards because of our commitment to providing South London with the skilled workforce it needs. Over 2000 of our students are supported by employers and our Passmore Centre for Apprenticeship, created in partnership with Southwark Council, provides a ‘one stop shop’ for employers and apprentices. To date we are working with 500 employers and 1600 apprentices, making us one of the largest higher and degree apprenticeship providers in England.”

Southwark Business Excellence Awards are organised by creative agency, White Label, on behalf of sponsors: Southwark Chamber of Commerce, Southwark Council, British Land and Great Portland Estates. Developers Landsec and Lendlease are sponsoring the following categories: ‘Women in Business’, ‘Contribution to the Community’, ‘Best Employer’ and ‘Independent Retailer’, respectively.

The finale of the awards programme – which involves a rigorous and independent judging process – will take place at ceremony on 25 June at Hilton London, Bankside.
