New appointments include Clarinettist Michael Collins and trombonist Mark Templeton.

Guildhall is delighted to announce the appointment of new teaching staff in the Wind, Brass & Percussion department: leading clarinettist and conductor Michael Collins, London Philharmonic Orchestra Principal Trombone Mark Templeton, Section Principal Percussion with the Royal Opera House Rachel Gledhill and recorder soloist Mirjam-Luise Münzel.

Clarinettist Michael Collins has enjoyed a distinguished career as a soloist, and has in recent years also become highly regarded as a conductor. From 2010 – 2018 he was the Principal Conductor of the City of London Sinfonia, and he has been committed to expanding the repertoire of the clarinet for many years. He received the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Instrumentalist of the Year Award in 2007 in recognition of his pivotal role in premiering repertoire by some of today’s most highly regarded composers.

Principal Trombone of the London Philharmonic Orchestra since 2006, Mark Templeton is a distinguished Guildhall School alumnus, where he was taught by Eric Crees, Simon Wills and Peter Gane, winning the Armourers and Braisiers’ Brass Prize in 1996. He will join the Guildhall teaching staff in September 2020.

Mark Templeton said: “I’m thrilled and excited to be joining the Guildhall trombone department. I had a brilliant time as a student and am really looking forward to working with Eric, Simon and all the other lovely staff.”

Rachel Gledhill was born in Yorkshire and began her musical life in the Brass Band world, and at age 15 was the first woman to be invited to join the Hammonds Sauce Works Brass Band. She joined the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 1992 and became Principal Percussion two years later. She has also been involved in numerous recordings for feature films including Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. In 2011, Rachel was appointed Section Principal Percussion with the Royal Opera House. Rachel is also a keen composer and has recently been invited to write for the ABRSM percussion syllabus.

Mirjam-Luise Münzel has studied recorder, historical performance and baroque cello, and graduated from Guildhall in 2017 following a Guildhall Artist Masters in Performance and an Artist Diploma. As well as her international career as a recorder soloist, she performs with the highly innovative Lux Musicae, and with Trio les Salonnieres, recently curating the Alte Musik Fest Friedenau “Rebellion!” in Berlin.
