Coercive and controlling behaviour is a form of Violence Against Women and Girls and an offence under s76 of the Serious Crime Act 2015.

However, the reality is this behaviour often goes unrecognised for what it is. Through raising awareness and understanding we can more confidently expose certain controlling behaviours as abusive. This symposium aims to change conversations around coercive control and domestic abuse, and in doing so contribute to keeping women and children safe.

Reasons to attend this event:

  • Increase awareness and understanding of the features and nature of coercive and controlling behaviour.
  • Contribute to current debates on coercive control as a form of Violence Against Women and Girls.
  • Share ideas and expertise on existing good practice with academics and practitioners from statutory and voluntary sector organisations.
  • Opportunity to join a collaborative network to support an holistic approach to addressing coercive control.

This is the first time LSBU has organised an event to mark 16 days of activism against Gender-Based Violence. This international campaign runs from November 25, the International Day Against Violence Against Women, and December 10, International Human Rights Day.

This event is brought to you jointly by the Crime and Justice Research Group, School of Law and Social Sciences and the School of Health and Social Care at LSBU.

Confirmed speakers:

  • Lyndsey Dearlove, Hestia, Head of UK SAYS NO MORE
  • Rhian Lewis, Pro Bono Associate, Hogan Lovells International LLP
  • Dr Tirion Havard, Senior Lecturer, LSBU
