Composers have worked in academic institutions for centuries, yet in recent decades institutional and government policy shifts have shone the spotlight on what exactly they do and, in particular, how their work is understood as research. Much navel-gazing (with few solutions) has emerged in response, with discussion often going in circles and little progress being made.

Dr Martin Scheuregger (University of Lincoln) will outline some of the established issues and positions in composition research, addressing areas from practice research methodologies to critiques of neoliberal research policy. He will propose ideas for developing process and policy in the hope of moving the discussion forward.
