Being an audience participant can be a confusing and contradictory business. When a performance requires us to do things, it puts us into the awkward situation of being both actor and spectator, of being part of the work of art while also the audience who receives it, and both perceiving subject and aesthetic object.
Dr Gareth White (Royal Central School of Speech and Drama) examines some of these contradictions – as experienced in his own participation – borrowing concepts from cognitive philosophy and bringing them into a conversation with critical theory.
