This exhibition aims to challenge hostility and discrimination against migrants by offering new ways to see, feel and understand conditions of mobility and settlement.

We Are Movers was developed through a series of participatory, arts-based conversations intended to bridge academic research and lived experiences of migration.

Project participants include staff and students from UCL and women and children from the Helen Bamber Foundation and Lewisham Refugee and Migrant Network. The group considered:

  • How can we challenge negative images of migrants?
  • How do experiences of poverty, hostility and coercion affect the possibility of “integration”?
  • What does it mean to belong?
  • How can our answers inform responses to displacement in universities and beyond?

We Are Movers has been presented at the Migration Museum, Beyond Borders festival at Battersea Arts Centre and the UCL Teaching and Learning Conference.

The exhibition is now coming to UCL in recognition of Refugee Week 2019, where a new image will be unveiled: “Refugees in Higher Education: It’s all connected”. This image includes general facts about displacement (in the world and in the UK) and explores what universities in the UK are doing to support access to higher education for refugees and forced migrants.

The aim is to create awareness among the UCL community and to ask what UCL could and should be doing to support displaced communities.
