The Experimental Theatre Project: A piece inspired from the book Monkey by Wu Ch’êng-ên (translated by Arthur Waley)
This latest piece hatched by the Acting Studies Experimental Theatre Project uses the innovation of each performer to bring together fragments of intimate memory and personal story inspired by the ancient Chinese legend The Monkey King – Journey To The West.
Reflecting human experience and seeking to discover authentic expression through collective responses to the novel, the project sets out to re-imagine for today, the dazzling and unique combination of nonsense and profundity, beauty and absurdity, comedy and spiritual wisdom that lies at the heart of the book.
The actors are studying on Guildhall School’s BA (Hons) Acting Studies dual-degree programme, which is run in collaboration with the Central Academy of Drama, Beijing. This trans-national dual-degree programme saw the first cohort of students enrolled in September 2016. These students are now in London for their third-year studies, and will graduate in 2020 after spending their last academic year of the programme in Beijing.
The Production Team are students on the MA Collaborative Theatre Production & Design programme and are early-career theatre practitioners. The programme gives opportunities for students to develop their theatre making abilities, work on a series of collaborative projects and explore their potential as creative artists.
