This event celebrates the collaboration between the Clapham Film Unit, Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) and LSBU History on the Clapham Film Unit/WILPF current ‘European Project 1919-2019’.

This filmed history project will produce a new documentary film featuring the story of WILPF delegates who met in Zurich in 1919 as part of the international struggle for women’s rights and to respond to the terms of 1919 Versailles Peace Treaty. The European Commission has funded WILPF and Clapham Film Unit to create this filmed history project inviting women from across Europe to reflect on women’s struggle for equal rights over the last 100 years.

Our panel discussion will focus on the history of transnational female activism during the years 1914 to 1939. We will consider how diverse this history is by exploring the part played by women of colour in the peace and suffrage movements. We will also discuss the importance of public history in generating greater public awareness of diverse histories through the use of innovative methods such as filmed history projects.

The panel conversation will be preceded by a screening of the 2015 Clapham Film Unit documentary film These Dangerous Women tracing the journey of British female peace activists who travelled to the 1915 Women’s Peace Congress at the Hague.

We conclude our event with afternoon tea/coffee and cake funded by the Division of Social Sciences, LSBU.
