UCL

Professor Mariana Mazzucato, Director of the UCL Institute for Innovation & Public Purpose (IIPP), has joined global leaders at the World Economic Forum, providing expertise around globalisation and competitiveness.

Throughout the forum, Professor Mazzucato is taking part in and leading several discussions, meetings and workshops, exchanging ideas and insight as part of wide-ranging conversations about the future of the world economy.

On Friday, the final day of the annual conference in Davos, she will be part of a panel discussion, ‘Global Economy in Transition: Shaping a New Architecture’, which will look at how to shape a more equitable and collaborative global architecture that is beneficial for future prosperity, environmental sustainability and global security.

The debate will be chaired by Christine Lagarde, MD of the International Monetary Fund and will include Lesetja Kganyago, Governor of the South African Reserve Bank; Haruhiko Kuroda, Governor of the Bank of Japan and Kristalina Georgieva, CEO of the World Bank.

Today, (Wednesday 23 January) Professor Mazzucato was part of a televised panel discussion entitled ‘More than GDP’, which debated alternatives to GDP as a method of measuring a nation’s progress. This featured Jacinda Ardern, Prime Minister of New Zealand; Angel Gurria, Secretary-General of the OECD; Ohood Bint Khalfan Al Roumi, Minister of State for Happiness and Well Being of the UAE and Erik Brynjolfsson, Director of the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy.

Tomorrow, Thursday, Professor Mazzucato will be running a workshop titled ‘Competitiveness in the Digital Age’, which will convene leaders and experts to share a new model of competitiveness in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

On Friday, Professor Mazzucato will Chair ‘What Should Globalization 4.0 Look Like?’, which will discuss whether or how the next wave of globalisation will be shaped by the Fourth Industrial Revolution; what global architecture do we need to ensure it is safer, fairer and more sustainable than in the past? What values should underpin it and what forms should its institutions take?
