Dr Chiara Ambrosio, UCL, is an Associate Professor in History and Philosophy of Science at the Department of Science and Technology Studies, University College London.

Her research focuses on visual culture across science and the arts from the nineteenth century to the present, American Pragmatism and the philosophy of Charles S. Peirce, and general issues in history and philosophy of science, with a particular focus on scientific representation. She is a strong believer in the combination of art and science as a pathway to public engagement, and her latest project is MUSO, a collaboration between museums, academia and improvised opera.

Public Engagement as Performance: MUSO at UCL (and Beyond)If scientific objects from museums and collections could sing, what stories would they bring to life? In this talk Dr. Chiara Ambrosio will present some preliminary results from MUSO, a new public engagement project supported by the UCL Grand Challenges. She will show how MUSO catalysed her own historical and philosophical interest in the relation between science and the arts toward a unique collaboration between museums and their audiences, academia, and a company of improvised opera artists.

MUSO’s aim is to give voice, through improvised opera, to objects’ stories, on the basis of what museum audiences decide those objects would say. The talk will show how the performances unfold on the spectacular stage of the Grant Museum of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy, and will also take you behind the scenes, to explore how collaborating with performers opens up new avenues of research.
