A Miles Davis feast, featuring two of his classic jazz orchestra collaborations with arranger Gil Evans, plus music from his ground-breaking Bitches Brew album.
Miles Ahead (1959) and Sketches of Spain (1960) established Miles and Gil as one of the great collaborative partnerships in 20th century music, moulding bebop, cool jazz and orchestral sounds into beautiful and unique jazz orchestra suites featuring Miles as soloist. Ten years later, Bitches Brew (1970) broke new ground through its layering of electric instruments, rock grooves, and incorporation of modal and free improvisation, plus the creative input of London musicians Dave Holland on bass and John McLaughlin on guitar.
The Guildhall Jazz Orchestra is one of Europe’s most adventurous student jazz orchestras. Directed by Scott Stroman, the orchestra has given the UK concert premieres of the three Gil Evans / Miles Davis suites, including Miles Ahead with US trumpet legend Marvin Stamm who returns from New York to headline this extraordinary evening.
