City Writes is an exciting new event created to showcase the best of City’s Short Courses Creative Writing talent. Readers are chosen from a short story competition open to all current and alumni students of City Short Creative Writing Courses. These competition winners will share the stage with a professional author from City’s alumni and/or teaching body.

After a fantastic first year of events, the professional writer will be alumna, C. G. Menon reading from her debut collection, Subjunctive Moods. C. G. Menon was born in Australia and now lives in London. She has won the Bare Fiction Prize, the Leicester Writes Prize, The Short Story Award, the Asian Writer Prize, The TBL Short Story Award and the Winchester Writers Festival award. She’s been shortlisted for the Fish short story prize, the Bridport prize and the Short Fiction Journal awards, as well as the Willesden Herald, Rubery and WriteIdea prizes and the Fiction Desk Newcomer award. Her work has been published in a number of anthologies and broadcast on radio, and she’s also been a member of several prestigious short story competition judging panels. She has a PhD in pure mathematics and is currently studying for a creative writing MA at City University. She’s also working on her first novel, set in 1980s Malaysia.

The competition winners joining C. G. Menon are Jacob Bigio, K. L. Jefford, Jane Clancy Reid and Su Yin Yap. With stories exploring the world outside and in, from a journey in Canada, through Sydney and Beachy Head, to a psycho-sexual clinical session, the event will be a real treat for the ears and mind.
