Known as ‘the Garden of England’, Kent is often associated with pastoral imagery, rurality and medieval heritage. As part of this event, participants will witness another side to Kent’s past: its extensive and fascinating industrial history.

Comprising both a rail journey on the preserved East Kent Railway and a guided tour around the former Tilmanstone Colliery site, this walk will tell the sometimes neglected century-long story of East Kent’s mining past.

We will begin with a short sight-seeing rail journey, travelling from the villages of Shepherdswell to Elvington along the historic East Kent Railway. On arrival, the walk route will start at the Elvington Heritage Centre. We will then walk a distance of one mile to the area where Tilmanstone Colliery was located, then walk a short and closed section of remaining railway embankment that passed the colliery, including the last remaining brick-built platforms from the entire route of the East Kent Railway, before returning back to the Elvington heritage centre for refreshments and for people to explore the area, and view displays and exhibits.
