Degree Apprenticeships at UWL win praise as companies and apprentices meet

Employers and apprentices joined senior academics from the University of West London for the second Degree Apprenticeships employer training and network event, as part of UWL’s commitment to providing high-quality apprenticeships of real value in the jobs market.

Around 25 company representatives completed training on methods for building strong relationships between apprentices and their mentors, followed by a social event for all mentors, apprentices and academics.

Degree Apprenticeships provide an opportunity to ‘earn as you learn’ as the apprentice is a full-time employee while studying for a degree over three to five years. The University has more than a decade’s experience in delivering apprenticeships and in 2013 received an outstanding grade from Ofsted recognising its excellent provision.

Companies represented at the latest event included large firms such as Virgin Media and the biscuit manufacturer Pladis Global and local businesses including One Point Ltd. Among the apprentices present were those currently working in roles as varied as data analyst, chartered manager and IT professional. Senior members of UWL’s academic team also attended, including Professor Amir Alani, Dean of the School of Computing and Engineering and Dr Suresh Gamlath, Head of the Claude Littner Business School.

There was praise for UWL’s management of degree apprenticeships from Sangeetha Viswanathan, Operations and Project Manager at One Point Ltd. She said:

‘We embarked on this Degree Apprentice journey this year and the dedicated and very supportive team at UWL have made the whole process very easy by guiding us at every step. Our apprentice has gelled very well with our team and we are very happy with the overall outcome.’

Sara Raybould, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Student Experience), delivered a speech at the event. She said: ‘Degree Apprenticeships are a core part of the University’s mission to provide exceptional education, preparing our apprentices for the world of work. The event provided a fantastic mix of local and big employers such as Virgin Media and Pladis Global, along with our enthusiastic new apprentices.’
