Students from Ravensbourne’s BA (Hons) Interior Design Environment Architectures (IDEA) course won a competition designing car interiors of the future, inspired by the latest Ford Fiesta.

In May last year, Ford debuted the new Ford Fiesta at Ravensbourne, challenging students internationally to design what they believe car interiors of the future will look like, as technology advances and functions become more compact. Judged by Ford interior designer Jens Sieber and exterior designer Ican Telesca, three designs were selected to be showcased at Ford’s Design Centre in Cologne, in front of a number of senior interior design professionals.

Ravensbourne’s ‘Iris’ group were among them, designed by Seniz Veli, Cansu Bal and Erdi Bal. The team were invited to Cologne for a behind the scenes tour of Ford’s Merkenich-Cologne factory and the Design Centre, as well as masterclasses with Ford’s design team.

Inspired by the 96 year old fashion designer and businesswoman Iris Apfel, the Iris concept centered around themes of mobility and convenience, including car seats which convert into scooters which can detach from the vehicle, allowing you to continue your travels in a more versatile manner.

Commenting, Seniz said: “This has been a long term project and it’s been exciting to see our ideas grow with the support of our tutors at Ravensbourne. Visiting the Ford factory and Design Centre was a great experience, enabling us to see how their vehicles are manufactured first hand. We were also introduced to a number of senior interior designers at Ford, discussing our concept and learning from their skills and expertise.”
