The Guildhall School and Shanghai Opera House present the UK premiere of The Wager, an original contemporary Chinese opera by Wen Deqing.

It’s New Year’s Eve and Zhao, a squire, is enjoying the snow and some music after dinner with his family. Suddenly a beggar in rags appears. Zhao gives the beggar alms but is stuck by curiosity. How has he survived the freezing winter?

A Faustian story of luck, temptation and fate, The Wager is based on the novel A Gamble on a Snowy Night by Gao Xiaosheng.

An orchestra of Guildhall musicians joins forces with singers from Shanghai Opera House to present the UK premiere of this memorable work, following the success of the company’s recent UK debut at ENO (Thunderstorm).

The Wager premiered at the Amadeus Festival in Geneva in 2003, and had its first debut at Shanghai Grand Theatre in China in the same year. Staged at Beijing International Music Festival and Shanghai International Art Festival in the following year, this notable contemporary work has sparked heated discussions among Chinese audience and critics. In 2008 invited by the Savonlinna Opera Festival in Finland, The Wager made its second appearance in Europe and won great acclaims. The presentation at Silk Street Theatre in London is the third time it has been performed on the world stage.
