The European Commission has appointed Professor Barbara Prainsack, Global Health & Social Medicine, to the European Group on Ethics and Science and New Technologies (EGE).

The EGE unites leading experts from Europe and worldwide, across the fields of natural and social sciences and humanities, philosophy, ethics and law. Since being established in 1991, the EGE has provided the European Commission with high quality and independent advice. Originally focusing on biomedical issues, its scope has expanded to a broader examination of the major societal questions of our time.

As part of a re-launch with 15 new high-calibre members, Professor Prainsack was chosen from over 200 candidates who responded to a public call for expression of interest. The selection process was undertaken with the support of an external Identification Committee, who ensured that there was a high-level of professional experience and a good balance in a variety of areas including skills, experience, knowledge and geographical diversity.

The EGE will advise the Commission on all areas of policy where ethical, societal and fundamental rights issues intersect with the development of science and new technologies. The group will hold its first meeting on 24-25 April 2017, when it will meet Commissioner Moedas and reflect on the most relevant topics for its first opinions. It will report to the Commission President, and to the College of Commissioners as a whole, and act under the direct responsibility of Commissioner Moedas.

Speaking of her appointment, Professor Prainsack said:

‘I am honoured to have been appointed to the Group. The Group has very important work to do: Many of the great societal challenges of our times are transnational in nature. Using technologies wisely and responsibly to address these challenges is crucial. I am looking forward to working with the other members and contributing advice on these issues.’
