International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

This year City, University of London invites leading experts to discuss the very current issues surrounding women’s appearance in the workplace.

– From WW1 to Thatcher, where did women’s “dress code” come from?
– What is a discriminatory professional dress code in the eyes of the law and where do the boundaries lie?
– Why is women’s appearance in the workplace an issue in the 21st century?

 

Panel:

Angela Jackman – Senior Law Lecturer and partner at Simpson Millar
Angela’s recent research centres on the way  African-Caribbean women choose to wear their hair. She recently had some evidence published in the House of Commons Joint  Committee report into “High heels and workplace dress codes”.

Charlotte Proudman – Barrister and Doctoral Researcher at the University of Cambridge
Charlotte is also an expert and media commentator on women’s rights.

Dr Florence Sutcliffe-Braithwaite – Lecturer in twentieth century British History, UCL
Florence is a historian of 20th century Britain, and has published on Thatcherism, New Labour, and ideas about class, gender and sexuality in the late 20th century. She is also co-editor of Renewal: A Journal of Social Democracy.

We are delighted to welcome our chair for the evening Professor Lis Howell, Director of Broadcasting at City and expert and researcher on women in broadcasting.
